Theus vs. Rice UNLV Rebel Coaching Hire: Lies and Unverified Facts for Ratings

As the search and interviews continue for the UNLV Rebel Men’s Basketball Head Coach, some in Las Vegas are using their powers of radio personality and Internet article writers on this site to propound false and unverified statements to increase ratings and “views.”

There are four candidates involved in the interview process: Reggie Theus, Dave Rice, Mike Dunlap and Ernie Kent.  All four were interviewed in great length but the two-horse race is mainly between Theus and Rice.  Both having attended UNLV and played basketball there under Jerry Tarkanian.

A certain “on-air” personality went live on the radio, stating that he “heard” from three sources, in which he would NOT verify, that the Theus interview went terrible, and he came in with an egotistical attitude.  A certain writer on this site has used this as Gospel for his own writing and is now on the Front page getting hammered with views based upon here-say.

The radio person mentioned has been known throughout the years to make many “shock jock” type comments to create a stir amongst his co-hosts and listeners to increase ratings.  At times, it can all be in due fun and needless harm, but in this case, it is the total opposite.

Since the hiring process began, he has been promoting the issue that Reggie has been an afterthought in the hiring search and Rice was essentially the choice all along. Basically just stringing him along for the ride, with possible improper hiring tactics and racial undertones.

This is total bogus information and really is putting a black eye on those involved at the university, including presidents and the athletic director himself.  Then to take this unsubstantiated information and post it on this site getting top-billing for selfish purposes just further exemplifies their need for negative journalism to promote themselves, and their inability to procure their own talents.

Myself, using due diligence, contacted Danny Tarkanian—former UNLV great, son of the famous coach and local politician—who DOES have knowledge of much of the inner proceedings and spoke with those involved in the hiring process including the candidates.

We interviewed Danny on our show, Vegaswise Sports Talk, which airs on Fox Sports Radio 920 Monday through Friday at 5-7pm and is also pod-casted, just click on the previous link.

He most undeniably stated that Reggie’s interview went very well and he did not show a negative attitude nor an ego.  Seven years ago, he applied for this, his “dream job,” and was rejected, yet given specific instructions on what he needed to do to improve his resume and gain better credibility to possibly one day interview for this job again.  He has gone above and beyond what they asked him to do.

Now I’m NOT stating that Rice is an unworthy candidate himself and just may be hired as the next head coach at UNLV.

But my issue and point is the unnecessary greed for attention that some feel they need to receive by spewing out negative and false information just to create and stir some type of controversy during the hiring process of one of the most important and highest payed public officials in the state of Nevada.
