The University of Oklahoma announced Thursday that the men’s basketball program committed two major rules violations when a former assistant coach failed to report that a player had received improper benefits and lied to the university and the NCAA investigators.
While former OU men’s basketball coach, now Duke assistant coach, Jeff Capel has never been implicated, the violations occurred with one of his assistants and during his time as head coach.
These charges are not new. There has been discussion about them over the course of the last few years.
Even if Capel was unaware of what his assistant was doing and had no part in personally setting up the payments to the player or anyone involved, what responsibility does he carry?
While he can’t be there with his staff and players around the clock, a head coach is accountable for the people that he hires or recruits.
And unfortunately, that is part of the weight of leadership. You are partially answerable for other people’s actions.
Now for your opinion. Weigh in on this topic:
To what degree is a head coach responsible for the various deeds and misdeeds of the entire program?
