Few fans may have heard of walk-on Jared Van Slyke, son of MLB player Andy Van Slyke. He went to Southeast Missouri State and barely played. So he transferred to Michigan—as a walk-on.

Benefiting from a depleted secondary, Van Slyke has worked hard and is now likely to see some meaningful playing time at the safety position this fall. "I've just earned it by playing hard, working hard all summer long," he said.

"I wasn't expecting to be in the position I'm in. It looks like I'm going to play a lot, and it looks like you're going to get rewarded for the work you've put in."
