In the 2011 NBA Draft, some teams will be looking for a centerpiece to their team, while others will be looking for the missing piece.
Justin Harper of Richmond has the talent to fit into either one of those scenarios.
The senior forward from the Spiders reminds me of Kevin Durant. He is tall and a bit lanky, but can score inside, drive to the hoop or stop and pop from the outside and drain a few three pointers. He was one of the best three point shooters in the country last season. That is extremely impressive for a person with his size.
Harper would be a great fit for the Chicago Bulls, and would absolutely love playing on the floor at the same time with Derrick Rose. Whether awaiting passes inside, or hanging out deep waiting for Rose to drive and dish, Harper could be an instant spark to the Bulls’ offense.
The biggest knocks against Harper are for his reliance on his jump shot and being to unselfish and not cresting his own shot. He also needs to become a little more physical, unless he plays like Durant, who is a solid defender but not one of the strongest.
Also, Harper excels in the open court, which would excite Rose right from the start. They could work very well together for many years to come as Chicago looks to get back to glory.
Kyle Nelson of DraftExpress says that Harper helped put himself on the map over the last couple of seasons at Richmond.
“His scoring abilities around the basket have improved, as well, where he displays improving footwork and a developing arsenal of moves,” says Nelson. “Though he likely lacks the strength to carve out position at the next level, his touch around the basket is solid and he has become more comfortable attacking the rim as a senior.”
Harper is one of those certain types of players who just gets it, and that can not be overlooked at the next level. He could provide instant offense to a team who is already a contender.
