Derrick Williams Has Made His NBA Case, Will GMs Take Notice?
Derrick Williams has really made a case to be considered the top overall pick in the NBA draft this year. He was not only named Pac-10 Player of the Year but he also came within a missed three pointer of taking the Wildcats to their first Final Four since 2001.
Williams has shown incredible versatility this year. He shoots from 60 percent from behind the arc but also is a great post player and rebounder.
The only thing that prevents Williams from being considered a sure thing is his size. He is listed at 6-foot-8 but he is probably closer to 6-foot-7 and that is not big enough to be a power forward in the NBA. He also doesn’t have the speed to consistently play the small forward.
However in a draft this shallow, those are things that can quickly be overlooked when trying to get the best player on your team.
With teams like Cleveland and Sacramento likely picking at the top of the draft, there are a number of teams picking at the front of the draft that would love to have his versatility on the roster.
In all likelihood Williams’ days in Tucson are at an end but there is no question that he has been a very entertaining player to watch and I think he will make a good pro.
