The first time that BYU and San Diego State faced off, it was billed as a clash of the titans. A fight between two of college basketball’s elite. A must see.
And it didn’t disappoint.
Jimmer Fredette would catch fire against the Aztecs and drop 43 points on the then No. 4 Aztecs. A big second half for the Cougars gave them the big W at the Marriott Center.
The win was so big, BYU fans rushed the court for the first time since just about anyone can remember.
Now, we get to see these top ten teams go at it again. This time, No. 4 SDSU will play host for the only team who has managed to beat them all year: the No. 7 BYU Cougars.
And as an added bonus, this game will be available to all on CBS.
Yes, it’s still February, but this game has a certain madness feeling to it.
If you are a fan of college basketball, even if you only have a passing interest in the sport, this is the game of games of the 2010-2011 regular season.
This will be the game of the year.
First off, this game will happen at Viejas Arena, home to some of the most rowdy fans in college basketball. These fans love to taunt any team unfortunate enough to find themselves there.
But most of all, they love to taunt BYU.
And since BYU’s leaving the MWC after this season ends, this will likely be the last time in a while that these two teams will face off at Viejas Arena.
SDSU fans were clamoring for Jimmer a full ten days before the big game in the final minutes against New Mexico.
And speaking of The Jimmer, BYU’s star guard is the front-runner for the Naismith Player of the Year Award.
Jimmer is dangerous the moment he crosses the half court line. He routinely makes shots from 30 feet out. He even made one from 40 feet against Utah earlier this season.
But if you guard really well around the arc, Jimmer can also drive right past you and make ridiculous circus-like layups.
Fouling The Jimmer doesn’t help you much, either. Fredette is No. 2 in the nation in points off of free throws on 89.5 percent shooting.
Teams have resorted to double or even triple teaming Jimmer, but to little avail, particularly with a supporting cast like Jackson Emery and Brandon Davies.
While SDSU doesn’t have a national star like Fredette, they have one of the most well rounded teams in the nation.
The three key players for the Aztecs are leading scorer F Kawhi Leonard, G D. J. Gay, and F Malcolm Thomas.
Leonard had a great game against BYU despite being sick, scoring 22 points and grabbing 15 rebounds. Gay, however, struggled a bit, finishing with only two points. Thomas looked decent, taking 10 points and six rebounds.
If all three of these players do well for SDSU, they might just be impossible to stop.
So, you’ve got two top ten teams with only three losses total between them. One of them is out for revenge for their only loss. This will be the last time these two teams play each other as conference rivals during the regular season. The favorite for POY will be performing. This will be on national television. The regular season MWC crown will go to the winner barring a major upset.
Oh, and a No. 1 seed in the NCAA tournament just might be up for grabs for the winner.
What more do you want?
So please, friends, watch this game. No matter who wins this one, this will be a game for the ages.
You’ll be glad you did.
